I think I got a lot more out of this course than I thought I
would. There are several things that I
will take on from the past fourteen weeks.
I have always wanted to own my business; I don’t know that I ever will
as my wife is more risk adverse than I am.
One of the things that I took out of from this course is that most people
come up against a wall and have a problem that they need to sort out and go
about finding out how to solve the problem.
The difference I learned is most entrepreneurs have the solution in mind
and work back words to find out how to achieve something to get the result they
need to.
I found that there is no age to entrepreneurs, sometimes I
think of entrepreneurs as young in their 20’s and 30’s. From the videos and the reading that is
simply not the case. There are several
people who become entrepreneurs in their own right and are different ages with
different levels of academia and or skill.
Another misconception that I learned was about academics and
again I found many entrepreneurs have achieved their bachelors and sometimes
the masters or more but don’t stop learning and developing. The case studies we read had individuals who
had degrees in a certain field and yet continued to learn and grow in other area
that wasn’t their specialised field.
If I was a mentor for someone, I think I would try and help
them find out what they wanted to do with their life; what are their talents
and goals, what are their dreams, what do they love doing and can they do this
on their own. I think if you are going
to go out on your own it would be important to read some books that would
assist them in building a model who you want to become and how you can do
it. There are some great books on
mastery and what you can do with your time to improve yourself.
Another aspect for me is surrounding myself with good people
that I can learn and grow with; this could be mentors or simply friends or
colleagues that are trying to improve themselves. I found that at my old job there wasn’t a
focus on education and self-improvement and due to this my own drive to succeed
and progress with my education wasn’t there.
Here at my new job I work with a lot of people who have degrees or are
very helpful and it makes me want to continue to try harder and to succeed.
Overall this course made me think about where I have gone
with my career and what I want to do next.
